Can I connect directly to the NBN box?

Can I connect directly to the NBN box?

Question

I’ve recently had the NBN installed at my home, and I noticed there’s an NBN box mounted on the wall. I’m wondering, is it possible for me to plug my devices straight into this NBN box, or do I need to use a separate router? I want to make sure I’m setting everything up correctly and getting the best internet experience. Can you advise?

Your Answer for can I connect directly to the NBN box

Your Answer for can I connect directly to the NBN box

Answer

The answer to whether you can connect directly to the NBN box depends on the type of NBN connection you have. The NBN box, also known as the NBN connection device or Network Termination Device (NTD), serves as the primary point of connection between your premises and the NBN network.

For certain types of NBN connections, such as Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), the NBN box provides multiple data ports, allowing you to connect your devices directly. However, for an optimal online experience, it’s recommended to connect a compatible router to the NBN box.

This router will distribute the internet connection to various devices in your home or office. Before making any connections, always refer to the setup guide provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or consult with a registered cabler, like SECURE A COM, to ensure the correct setup and to avoid any potential issues.

Do I Need a Modem for NBN?
Do I Need a Modem for NBN?

Do I Need a Modem for NBN?

Question

Do I really need a modem for my NBN connection, or can I just use a router? What’s the difference based on the type of NBN technology?

Your Answer

Your Answer

Answer

1. Difference Between a Modem and a Router for NBN:

  • A modem is a networking device that connects your address to the internet. It acts as a translator between the analog signal from your internet service provider and the digital signal that links to the router and individual devices in your property.
  • A router takes the internet from the modem and shares it among the devices in your home, allowing multiple devices to connect to the internet simultaneously.

2. Do You Need a Modem for NBN?

  • For certain NBN technology types such as Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP), Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC), Fibre-to-the-Curb (FTTC), NBN Fixed Wireless, and Sky Muster satellite NBN, you would need an NBN box/NTD/modem provided by NBN Co to get online.
  • For Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB) and Fibre-to-the-Node (FTTN) technologies, modem-routers are commonly used. These are devices that combine both a modem and a router’s functionalities. These technologies rely on the VDSL2 standard, which is used to achieve optimal broadband speeds from copper wiring.
  • If you’re connected via any of the other mentioned NBN technologies, any modern router will work with the NBN box/NTD/modem options.

3. NBN-Compatible Routers and Modem-Routers:

  • Technically, there’s no specific device known as an “NBN router” or “NBN modem-router”. What you need is an NBN-compatible router or modem-router.

To determine the exact type of hardware you need for your specific NBN connection, it’s recommended to contact your internet service provider or NBN Co for clarity. They will provide the necessary equipment based on your NBN technology type and ensure compatibility.

Do I need NBN for internet?

Question

I’ve recently moved to Australia and I’m hearing a lot about the NBN. Do I absolutely need to switch to the NBN for my internet and landline services, or are there other options available? I currently use mobile broadband and I’m wondering if that’s sufficient

Your Answer for do I need NBN for internet

Your Answer for do I need NBN for internet

Answer

The National Broadband Network (NBN) has been a significant project in Australia, aiming to provide high-speed internet access to households and businesses across the country. While the NBN has its merits, it’s not the only option available for those seeking reliable internet connectivity. Let’s delve into some of the best alternatives to the NBN.

4G Routers

4G routers use the same technology as 4G smartphones, providing internet access through mobile networks. These routers are especially useful for areas with strong 4G coverage but limited NBN connectivity. The key benefits include:

  • Speed and Reliability: 4G routers can offer speeds between 20Mbps and 50Mbps, depending on the network coverage and congestion.
  • Ease of Setup: Unlike the NBN, which might require technician visits and installations, 4G routers are plug-and-play. Simply turn on the router, and you’re connected.

5G Routers

5G is the next generation of mobile network technology, promising faster speeds and more reliable connections than its predecessor, 4G. 5G routers tap into this network to provide internet access. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Superior Speeds: While 4G offers decent speeds, 5G can deliver top speeds that are multiple times faster. However, real-world performance might vary based on signal strength and network congestion.
  • Future-Proofing: As 5G networks expand and improve, users with 5G routers stand to benefit from these advancements.

Starlink

Starlink, a project by SpaceX, aims to provide global internet coverage using satellites. It’s an ambitious alternative to traditional internet delivery methods. The highlights include:

  • Global Coverage: Starlink’s satellite network promises to deliver internet access even in remote and underserved areas.
  • Competitive Speeds: Early users have reported speeds comparable to or even exceeding traditional broadband connections.

Do I Need NBN for Internet?

In Australia, the NBN is gradually replacing most of the existing landline phone and internet networks. If you’re looking for a landline or broadband service, you might consider switching to the NBN. However, if you’re using mobile broadband or other wireless services, the NBN might not be necessary. Always consult with your service provider to determine the best option for your needs.

Alternative Products to Bypass NBN

For those interested in bypassing the NBN, several products on the market can help. From powerful 4G and 5G routers to Starlink’s satellite dishes, there’s a range of equipment designed to provide reliable internet access without relying on the NBN. Before making a purchase, it’s essential to research and choose a product that aligns with your connectivity needs and budget.

In conclusion, while the NBN serves as a primary internet source for many Australians, it’s not the only option. Alternatives like 4G routers, 5G routers, and Starlink offer promising solutions for those seeking different or supplementary internet sources. As technology continues to evolve, it’s always a good idea to stay informed and choose the best connectivity solution for your unique situation.

Should I take my NBN box when I move?

Question

I’m in the process of relocating to a new home and I’m unsure about what to do with my current NBN box. Should I pack it up and bring it with me to the new place, or is it best to leave it at my current address? I don’t want to face any connectivity issues at my new residence. Can you advise

Put the NBN box down gently and back away!

Put the NBN box down gently and back away!

Answer

When you’re moving house, you might wonder whether to take your NBN box with you. The answer is straightforward: you should leave it behind. Each NBN connection box is specifically coded to the residence where it was installed.

Even if you were to take it to your new home, it wouldn’t function. If you move to a new place and find the connection box missing, you’ll likely have to wait for your service provider to issue a replacement, which could delay your internet setup at the new location. If you accidentally damage your NBN connection box during the moving process, it’s recommended not to attempt any repairs on your own. Instead, contact your service provider for guidance and potential troubleshooting.

If I switch to an NBN plan, will I still be able to use my old landline phone? And if not, are there any alternatives available that would allow me to make calls like I used to?

Here Is the answer to - Do you need a landline for NBN?

Here Is the answer to - Do you need a landline for NBN?

Answer

The NBN (National Broadband Network) is designed to replace the traditional copper phone lines in Australia. This means that once the NBN is available in your area and you choose to switch to an NBN plan, your old landline will be disconnected. However, you don’t necessarily need a traditional landline to use the NBN

Many NBN plans come with a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) service, which allows you to make phone calls over the internet. If you still want to keep your old phone number, many providers offer the option to port your existing number to their VoIP service. It’s essential to discuss your needs with your chosen ISP to ensure you get the right plan and services for your requirements.

I hope this provides clarity on your questions. If you have any more queries or need further assistance, feel free to ask!

Do you need a phone line for NBN?

Question

Hi there, I’m considering switching to NBN but I’m a bit confused. I currently have a landline phone connection. Do I need to maintain this separate phone line to get NBN? And if I want to keep my home phone service, how does that work with the new NBN setup?

Answer

Answer

Answer

No, you don’t need a separate phone line for the NBN. The days when a phone line was essential for internet access are behind us. Modern broadband technologies, including the NBN, use either full fibre or a hybrid of fibre and copper. When copper is used, it’s exclusively for its digital component, unlike older technologies that used a mix of analogue (for landline calls) and digital. This is somewhat similar to ADSL but with the potential for much faster speeds.

However, while you don’t need a separate phone line for internet access, certain NBN technologies do use the old phone socket to connect. These technologies include Fibre-to-the-Curb (FTTC), Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB), and Fibre-to-the-Node (FTTN). It’s worth noting that while you can get a home phone service with an NBN plan, the technology used is different. Traditional copper wiring is no longer used for making and receiving calls. Instead, digital voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technology is employed.

Does NBN need a phone socket?

Does NBN need a phone socket?

Question

I’m in the process of transitioning to NBN and I’ve heard different things about the need for phone sockets. I want to ensure I have the right setup for my connection type. Can you clarify if I’ll need a phone socket for my NBN connection, and if so, what kind of socket and cabling would be best for optimal performance?

Here Is Answer to does NBN need a phone socket?

Here Is Answer to does NBN need a phone socket?

Answer

Yes, the requirement for a phone socket with NBN depends on the type of NBN connection you have:

  1. FTTC (Fibre to the Curb), FTTN (Fibre to the Node), and FTTB (Fibre to the Building): For these types of connections, a phone socket is essential. The socket should have a cable that doesn’t pass through any other sockets and runs directly from the NBN network lead-in cable straight to the terminal socket used to connect the modem or router. It’s crucial to ensure that there are no bridge taps on these services, as they can degrade the quality of the connection. For these installations, we at SECURE A COM use cat6 compatible RJ45 sockets to ensure the best connection quality.
  2. HFC (Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial): For an HFC connection, you will need an F adaptor socket, similar to the ones used by Foxtel or other pay TV services.
  3. FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) and Fixed Wireless: While a traditional phone socket isn’t required for these connections, it’s highly recommended to have a cat6 data cable installed from the NBN box to the desired location of the router. This ensures optimal Wi-Fi performance throughout the premises.

In conclusion, the necessity of a phone socket or specific cabling largely depends on the type of NBN connection. Proper installation and the right choice of sockets and cables are crucial for achieving the best internet performance. If you’re unsure about your connection type or need assistance with installation, SECURE A COM, with our expertise in NBN fault-finding and installation services, is here to help.

Does NBN provide Voltage on the phone line?
Does NBN provide Voltage on the phone line?

Does NBN provide Voltage on the phone line?

Question

I heard that the NBN doesn’t require any voltage on the phone line for internet service. Does this mean I can still use my traditional landline phone with the NBN? How does that work?

Your Answer

Your Answer

Answer

Great question! You’re correct that modern NBN technology doesn’t require voltage on the line for internet data transmission. However, if you wish to continue using your traditional landline phone, you certainly can. When you transition to the NBN, the required 48V DC voltage for your traditional landline phone can be supplied through the modem’s FXS port.

Regarding the ring voltage, it’s important to note that this can vary depending on the specific hardware and configuration. According to data available, the ring voltage from a VoIP port on a router could range from 40 to 90 Vpk (Voltage peak), as specified in a Cisco data sheet for a particular VoIP adapter1. The ring voltage is often discussed in the context of FXS (Foreign Exchange Station) voice ports, which provide ring voltage along with dial tone to the connected devices2. In certain Cisco voice gateways, the FXS interface supplies either -24Vdc or -36Vdc idle battery.

The exact voltage might vary depending on your particular VoIP hardware and its configuration. If you have a specific model of router or VoIP adapter in mind, we recommend consulting the technical specifications or user manual to find out the precise ring voltage it provides.

This means that your modem takes on some of the functions previously carried out at the telephone exchange, making your home NBN modem a crucial piece of equipment for both high-speed internet and traditional phone service.

How long does NBN take to connect?

Question

I’ve just moved into a new place and I’m setting up my NBN for the first time. I noticed the sync light isn’t turning solid blue. How long should I typically wait for the NBN connection device to set up, and what should I do if it takes longer than expected?

Here Is How long it takes NBN to connect?

Here Is How long it takes NBN to connect?

Answer

If it’s the first time you are connecting an NBN connection device, it can take up to 15 minutes for the NBN connection device to complete its installation setup. This mode can take time. Once it is finished, the sync light that looks like a link should be a solid blue colour.

If it’s not the first time you are connecting, then it should not take longer than 7 minutes to connect. If it takes longer than this, you may have an NBN-related fault. First, contact your ISP for a line test. If they advise you need a private technician, call us on 02 9188 1577 or book us for a service call.

Here is a rough guide to costs

Answer

Relocating your NBN box (NTD) is possible, and if it’s placed in an inconvenient location, it’s recommended to engage a professional company to move it. The cost for relocating the NTD can vary based on the size of your house and the current location of the NTD.

On average, the cost to relocate your NBN box inside your house typically ranges between $360-$500, depending on various factors. However, if the primary reason for relocating the NBN box is to optimise speed and have it closer to devices like a TV or computer, an alternative solution might be to install a CAT6 data cable between the NTD and the desired modem or phone location.

Here Is how to configure your NBN modem

Here Is how to configure your NBN modem

Answer

The configuration of an NBN modem involves several steps to ensure a seamless internet connection. First and foremost, it’s essential to understand that a modem acts as the gateway between your internet-ready devices and the world wide web. Many modern NBN-compatible modems combine the functions of both a modem and a router, simplifying the setup process. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to configure your NBN modem:

Ensure you have an internet plan: Before any setup, ensure you’ve signed up for an internet plan with an ISP.
Connect the necessary cables: Depending on your NBN connection type (e.g., FTTC, HFC, FTTP, Fixed Wireless, FTTN/B), you’ll need to connect specific cables to your modem and the NBN device. This might involve ethernet cables, telephone cables, or coaxial cables.

Configure the internet connection via your browser: Access your modem’s settings through its IP address (usually found on the bottom or back of the device). Once logged in using the modem’s admin credentials, input the details provided by your ISP. This might include a specific username and password for your internet connection.

Set up a new Wi-Fi network name and password: If you wish to personalize your Wi-Fi details, access your modem’s settings again and navigate to the wireless settings to change the network name and password.

  2. Power Up: Connect the power cable to your modem/router and plug it into an electrical outlet. Turn on the modem/router.
  3. Check Lights: Wait for the Internet light on your modem/router to become stable.

Additional Steps:

  1. Connect Telephone: If you have a landline, connect the Phone 1 port on the back of your modem to your telephone handset.
  2. Connect Other Devices: Use additional Ethernet cables to connect any of the 4 LAN ports on the back of your modem/router to your PC or other wired devices, if needed.
  3. Wireless Setup: If you are using Wi-Fi, you may need to set up your wireless network through the modem/router’s web interface.

Configuration:

  • Log into Modem/Router: Open a web browser and enter the IP address of your modem/router. This is often 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
  • Username and Password: Enter the default username and password, often admin/admin.
  • Internet Settings: Navigate to the Internet settings section and enter any required information such as PPPoE username and password, which you should have received from your ISP.

Remember, these are general guidelines, and the exact steps may vary depending on your modem/router model and ISP. Always refer to the specific instructions provided by your ISP or the modem/router’s manufacturer for the most accurate information.

Answer

How to connect a router to NBN FTTP? The process of connecting a router to NBN FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) is as follows:

  • Locate your nbn™ connection box inside your premise.
  • Connect the black power cord to the black port on the nbn™ box and the other end to a power outlet.
  • Use an Ethernet cable, typically blue or yellow, and connect it from the UNID port of the nbn™ box to the WAN port of your modem. Some modems might label the WAN port as “Internet”.
  • Once connected, you can then connect your devices to one of the LAN ports on your modem to access the internet.
  • For a wireless setup, refer to the wireless security card for the Wi-Fi network name and password. This card can usually be found inside the modem box or on a sticker at the base of the modem

Here Is how to connect NBN to a router?

Answer

How to connect NBN to a router? The process of connecting the NBN to a router involves setting up the NBN connection box and then connecting it to your Wi-Fi gateway (router). Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Initial Setup:

    • Ensure you have an NBN connection box and a Wi-Fi gateway (router).
    • Unplug all devices from all phone sockets in your home and remove any ADSL/central filters.
    • Check the indicator light panel on the top of the NBN connection box. If it’s covered, slide the cover open

Connection:

      • Plug the NBN connection box into a power point but keep the power off.
      • Connect the NBN connection box to a telephone socket using the NBN telephone cable.
      • Turn on the power to the NBN connection box and wait. The DSL, Connection, and Power Lights should be solid blue when ready.
      • Connect and power the Wi-Fi gateway (router) supplied by your phone and internet provider. Use an Ethernet cable to connect the NBN connection box to your Wi-Fi gateway (router). The port on the Wi-Fi gateway (router) should be labelled ‘WAN’, ‘NBN’, or ‘internet’.
      • Connect your other devices to the Wi-Fi gateway (router).

For a visual guide, you can refer to the NBN setup guide for Fibre to the Curb (FTTC).

How to find the NBN wall socket?

Question

Hey guys. I can’t seem to find a socket in my house to connect my NBN FTTN too. Any tips on how i can track the socket down. The real estate said the last owner had internet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Here Is how to find the NBN wall socket?

Here Is how to find the NBN wall socket?

Answer

The NBN wall socket is the point in your home where your NBN connection meets your internal wiring. To find your NBN wall socket:

How to find the NBN wall socket?

Many homes may have an old yellow NBN socket, a relic from the Telstra days. Alternatively, you might encounter a socket with an RJ11 or RJ45 type connection. Typically, every home should have at least one such socket. To locate it:

  1. Check Every Room: Go through each room in your house. Look for any cables that might be protruding from a hole in the wall without any connection. This could potentially be your internet cable.
  2. Old Alarm Systems: If your home has an old back-to-base alarm system, it might have a phone point. This could be another place to check for the NBN socket.
  3. Flooring Changes: For those living in units that have transitioned from carpet to floorboards, it’s not uncommon (though ill-advised) for skirting sockets to be cut off, especially if the cable previously ran beneath the carpet.
  4. Under the House: If you live in a standalone house, inspect beneath it. Look for yellow or blue cables and trace them. Where they enter the house is likely where you’ll find the socket.
  5. Lead-In Cable Connection: Another possibility is that your connection might be directly to the lead-in cable. To check this, go under the house towards the front. You might spot a conduit emerging from the ground, pointing towards the street. Follow this cable to its entry point into the house, and that’s likely where your socket will be located.

By following these steps, you should be able to locate your NBN wall socket. If you’re still having trouble, consider seeking professional assistance.

Here Is how to fix the red optical light on the NBN box?

Answer

How to fix the red optical light on the NBN box? A red optical light on the NBN box indicates an issue with the fibre optic connection. Here’s how you can troubleshoot it:

Initial Checks:

    • Turn off the NBN box at the plug socket.
    • Turn the NBN box back on, ensuring that the optical light and power lights are on.
    • If the cover of the NBN box is on, remove it.

Resolving the Red Optical Light:

    • If the optical light is red, try resetting the NBN box using a pen or paperclip to press the reset button.
    • If resetting doesn’t resolve the red optical light, contact your service provider and inform them that your FTTP connection is not working and the Optical light is red.

Checking Modem Connection:

    • Ensure both the power light and optical light on the NBN box are green.
    • Check that your modem is properly connected from the WAN port to the appropriate UNI-D port of the NBN box.
    • If the UNI-D port light doesn’t turn green or amber, try connecting to the other UNI-D ports. If none turn green or amber, contact your service provider.

Here Is how to Replace an NBN Battery?

Here Is how to Replace an NBN Battery?

Answer

Thank you for your question! It sounds like your NBN unit’s battery does indeed need replacing. I’ll provide you with detailed instructions below on how to safely replace the battery in your NBN power supply unit.

I hope this is helpful! Let me know if you need further assistance.

How to Replace an NBN Battery?

Step 1: Identify the Need for Replacement

Look out for a red ‘Replace Battery’ light on your NBN power supply unit or listen for an alarm sound. These are indicators that the battery needs to be replaced.

Step 2: Purchase the Correct Battery

The power supply unit for an NBN connection typically requires a 12V 7.0 to 7.2 Ah 6 cell SLA (Sealed Lead Acid) battery. Make sure the battery is compatible with your NBN unit.

Step 3: Safety Precautions

Before you start, make sure to turn off the power supply to the NBN unit to avoid any electrical hazards. It’s advisable to wear rubber gloves while handling batteries to prevent any chemical exposure.

Step 4: Open the Battery Compartment

The battery compartment is usually located at the bottom or the side of the NBN power supply unit. Use a screwdriver if necessary to open the battery compartment cover.

Step 5: Replace the Battery

Carefully remove the old battery from the compartment and insert the new one, ensuring the terminals are correctly aligned. Secure the battery and close the compartment cover.

Step 6: Restore Power and Test

Restore the power supply to the NBN unit and check that the ‘Replace Battery’ light is off and the alarm has stopped sounding.

Step 7: Dispose of Old Battery

Take the old battery to a recycling centre or return it to the store where you purchased the new one, as these batteries should not be disposed of in regular waste.

How to Report NBN Cable Damage?
How to Report NBN Cable Damage?

How to Report NBN Cable Damage?

Question

I’ve recently noticed some damage to what I believe are the NBN cables on my property, and I’m not sure what steps I should take to get it fixed. Can you provide guidance on how to report this and what my responsibilities might be in terms of repairs and costs

Here Is how to Report NBN Cable Damage

Here Is how to Report NBN Cable Damage

Answer

How to Report NBN Cable Damage: When you suspect damage to NBN cables, it’s crucial to act swiftly and responsibly. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to proceed:

  1. Identify the Damage: Before reporting, ensure that the damage is indeed to an NBN cable. NBN cables are typically labelled, and their appearance might differ from other utility cables. If you’re unsure, it’s always better to report it to be on the safe side.
  2. Contact Your Service Provider: NBN Co is the wholesaler, and your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is the retailer. If you suspect damage to the NBN infrastructure, you should report it to your ISP. They have the necessary channels to liaise with NBN Co and will handle the reporting process on your behalf.
  3. Provide Detailed Information: When reporting the damage to your ISP, be as descriptive as possible. Mention the location of the damage, the extent of the damage, and any potential hazards it might pose. If possible, take photos as they can be helpful for the repair team.
  4. Safety First: If the damaged cable poses any immediate danger, such as exposed wires, keep a safe distance and ensure others do the same. If necessary, contact local authorities or emergency services.
  5. Follow Up: If you don’t receive a timely response or see any repair activity, follow up with your ISP. Persistent communication ensures the damage is prioritised and addressed promptly.

Customer’s Responsibility: It’s essential to understand where the responsibility lies when it comes to damaged cables:

  • If the cable damage is on your property, including anything from the lead-in cable to internal cabling inside your home, unit, or office, the responsibility falls on you. This means you’ll need to cover the repair costs.
  • In such cases, you’ll need to find an internet technician service to address the issue. Companies like SECURE A COM, with expertise in fixing faults with internet services and providing installation work, can be invaluable in these situations.
  • If you’re unsure about the damage or need expert advice on the next steps, don’t hesitate to give SECURE A COM a call at 02 9188 1577 or leave a message.. With their extensive experience in the industry, they can provide you with the guidance you need.

Remember, maintaining the integrity of your internet infrastructure is not only essential for your connectivity but also for ensuring the safety of your property and its occupants.

Here Is how to Reset Your NBN Modem?

Answer

Thank you for your question! I understand how frustrating intermittent internet issues can be. I’ll provide you with detailed instructions below on how to properly reset your NBN modem.

How to Reset an NBN Modem?

Resetting an NBN modem can be a useful troubleshooting step if you’re experiencing connectivity issues. Below is a more detailed guide on how to perform this task.

Step 1: Identify the Issue

Before proceeding with the reset, try to identify the issue you’re facing. This could be slow internet, frequent disconnections, or complete loss of service. A reset should be considered a last resort after other troubleshooting steps have failed.

Step 2: Prepare for the Reset

Make sure to save any ongoing work on your devices, as the reset will temporarily disconnect you from the internet. Inform other users in the household that the internet will be down for a few minutes.

Step 3: Turn Off the Power

Locate the wall outlet where your NBN box is plugged in and turn off the power. This usually involves flipping a switch or unplugging the power cable from the wall outlet.

Step 4: Disconnect Cables

Disconnect all power cables connected to the NBN box. This usually includes the power adapter and any Ethernet cables connected to other devices.

Step 5: Wait

Wait for at least 2 minutes. This allows the NBN box to fully power down and clear its internal cache.

Step 6: Reconnect and Power On

After waiting, reconnect all the power cables and turn the power back on at the wall outlet.

Step 7: Wait for Reinitialisation

The NBN box will take up to five minutes to come back online. During this time, you may notice various lights flashing on the device as it goes through its startup sequence.

Step 8: Check for a Reset Button

Some NBN boxes come with a reset button. If your box has one, you can press it using a pin or a paperclip. Hold it down for about 10 seconds and then release. This will restore the device to its factory settings.

Step 9: Test the Connection

Once the NBN box is back online, test your internet connection on your devices to ensure that the reset has resolved the issue.

Step 10: Additional Configuration

If you had custom settings on your NBN box, you might need to reconfigure them. This can include Wi-Fi settings, port forwarding rules, or any other custom configurations.

By following these steps, you should be able to successfully reset your NBN modem. If you continue to experience issues, it’s advisable to contact your service provider for further assistance.

Here Is how you Set Up an NBN Modem?

Answer

Thank you for reaching out with your question! I completely understand that setting up new technology can be a bit overwhelming. I’ll provide you with detailed instructions below to guide you through the process of setting up your NBN modem.

How to Set Up an NBN Modem?

Setting up an NBN modem involves several steps, from ensuring compatibility to configuring settings. Below is a more detailed guide:

Step 1: Check Compatibility

  • Modem Type: Make sure that your modem is compatible with the NBN technology available at your location. This information can usually be found on your ISP’s website or by contacting their customer service.

Step 2: Unpack and Place the Modem

  • Location: Place your modem in a central location in your home to ensure optimal Wi-Fi coverage.
  • Unpack: Unbox the modem and its accessories, including power cables, Ethernet cables, and any other peripherals.

Step 3: Connect to NBN Connection Box

  • FTTN/FTTB: If you have Fibre to the Node or Fibre to the Basement, connect a phone cable from the DSL port on your modem to the telephone wall socket.
  • FTTP/Fixed Wireless/HFC/FTTC: For these types of connections, connect an Ethernet cable from the WAN port on your modem to the appropriate port on the NBN Connection Box.

Step 4: Power Up

  • Electrical Outlet: Plug the modem’s power cable into an electrical outlet and turn it on.
  • Wait: Allow some time for the modem to boot up. This usually takes a few minutes.

Step 5: Configure Modem Settings

  • Web Interface: Open a web browser on a device connected to the modem’s network. Enter the modem’s IP address, often 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, into the address bar.
  • Login: Use the default username and password, usually admin/admin, to log in.
  • ISP Information: Navigate to the Internet settings section and enter any required ISP information like PPPoE username and password.
  • Wi-Fi Settings: You can also configure your Wi-Fi settings, such as the network name (SSID) and password, at this stage.

Step 6: Test the Connection

  • Check Lights: Ensure that the Internet or DSL light on the modem is stable.
  • Test: Open a web browser and try navigating to a website to confirm that the Internet connection is working.

How to Silence an NBN Battery Alarm Permanently?

Question

My NBN box has been beeping non-stop, and it’s becoming quite disruptive. I suspect it might be related to the battery. Can you guide me on how to either replace the battery or silence the alarm permanently? I’d prefer a solution that doesn’t require me to call out a technician.

Here Is how to Silence an NBN Battery Alarm Permanently

Here Is how to Silence an NBN Battery Alarm Permanently

Answer

If your NBN box is constantly beeping, it’s likely indicating that the battery is low or needs replacement. Here’s how you can address the beeping:

Replace the Battery: If the NBN box detects an old or worn-down battery, it will beep once every 15 minutes. A red light will also appear next to the ‘Replace Battery’ marker on the NBN box.

The best way to stop the beeping is to replace the battery. It’s relatively cheap and easy to do so. After confirming that your battery needs replacing, purchase a new one from a store like Battery World or Jaycar. Then, turn off the NBN box, disconnect it from the main power, open the front cover, and replace the battery. The new battery will take up to 24 hours to charge fully.

Manually Turn Off the Alarm: There’s an ‘Alarm Silence’ button on your NBN box that can disable the beeping. To silence the alarm for 24 hours, hold the button for 2 seconds or until you hear a beep. If you want to turn off the alarm indefinitely, hold the button for 15 seconds. You’ll hear a beep at 2 seconds and another at 15 seconds. To re-enable the alarm, simply hold the button for the same duration as when you turned it off.

Additionally, understanding the status lights on the NBN box can help diagnose potential issues. For instance, if you have a Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) NBN box, you can lift the cover to view the status lights and determine the nature of the problem. More details can be found here.

How to switch NBN providers?
How to switch NBN providers?

How to switch NBN providers?

Question

Hello SECURE A COM team, I’ve been thinking about switching my NBN provider, but I’m not sure about the entire process. Can you guide me on what equipment I’ll need, whether I should cancel my current plan immediately, and any other essential steps I should be aware of during the transition? I’d also like to know about any potential costs or fees involved. Thanks for your assistance!

Here Is how to switch NBN providers?

Here Is how to switch NBN providers?

Answer

Switching NBN providers might seem daunting, but it’s a straightforward process once you know the steps:

  1. Equipment Needed: Most NBN plans come with a new NBN-ready modem. This might be included in the cost of your plan or could incur an extra fee.
  2. DON’T Cancel Your Existing Plan: It’s a misconception that you need to cancel your current plan before signing up for a new one. This could leave you without internet for an extended period. Retain your current setup until you’ve finalised your new plan and are ready to transition.
  3. Check Your Contract: Ensure you’re not in the middle of a long-term contract to avoid early cancellation fees.
  4. Research and Choose Your New NBN Plan: Determine why you’re switching and read reviews or ask friends about their providers. Once decided, discuss plan options and the setup process with your new provider.
  5. Backup Data: If any data is tied to your original provider, make copies. This might include emails or other services linked to your ISP.
  6. Setup New Equipment: Ensure your modem is compatible with the new service. If a new modem is provided, it’s a good idea to use it to avoid future complications.
  7. Prepare for the Switchover: Your new ISP will handle the transition. Typically, the NBN switch is seamless, with minimal downtime.
  8. Cancel Your Old Service: Once your new service is active, remember to cancel your old one. In some cases, your new provider might notify the old one, but it’s generally your responsibility.

Is AGL Internet good?

Question

I’ve been considering switching my internet provider and came across AGL Energy’s NBN plans. I know they’re primarily an energy provider, but how reliable is their internet service? Have people generally had positive experiences with their speeds and customer support?

Your Answer about AGL Internet

Your Answer about AGL Internet

Answer

The quality of AGL Internet largely depends on individual experiences and specific locations. AGL Energy, primarily known as an energy provider, ventured into the telecommunications sector offering NBN plans. Some users have reported satisfactory speeds and customer service, while others have faced challenges.

It’s essential to consider factors such as the type of NBN connection available in your area, the specific plan you’re interested in, and any promotional offers that might be available. As with any service provider, it’s a good idea to read reviews, compare plans with other providers, and perhaps even test their service for a month before making a long-term commitment.

Is NBN fibre optic?

Question

Hello SECURE A COM, I’ve been hearing a lot about the NBN and its use of fibre optic technology. Can you confirm if the NBN actually uses fibre optics? And if so, how does it work, especially for homes? Do I need any special installation for it

Here Is your answer to Is NBN fibre optic

Here Is your answer to Is NBN fibre optic

Answer

Yes, the NBN (National Broadband Network) does utilise fibre optic technology in some of its connection types. One such connection is the NBN Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) connection. In an FTTP connection, a fibre optic line is run directly from the nearest available fibre node to the premises. This type of connection requires an NBN network device to be installed inside the home, and this device requires power to operate. The installation can only be done by an approved NBN installer or phone and internet provider

NBN dropping out every 10 minutes
Why Is My NBN dropping out every 10 minutes?

Why Is My NBN dropping out every 10 minutes?

Question

I’m so frustrated! My NBN internet keeps cutting out every 10 minutes, like clockwork. I called my service provider, and they basically told me it might be an issue with the wiring inside my house. But here’s the kicker — they won’t fix it for me! They told me to sort it out myself by hiring a private technician.

Any advice on why this keeps happening would be a lifesaver. Cheers!

Here Is why Your NBN Is Dropping Out Every 10 Min

Here Is why Your NBN Is Dropping Out Every 10 Min

Answer

I totally get how frustrating constant dropouts can be. Most of the time, the root cause of these issues lies in the internal cabling of your home. If your home was wired before the NBN era, it’s very likely set up in either a star or daisy chain configuration, which is known to cause bridge taps. Bridge taps can drastically reduce your internet speed and even lead to frequent dropouts—sometimes every 10 minutes or so—before the system resets itself.

Additionally, other factors like faulty lead-in cables that connect your home to the street, old cabling, poorly made joins, or even faulty sockets and leads can contribute to the problem.

Given all these possibilities, it’s always a good idea to have an experienced internet technician come in to troubleshoot. They can accurately identify the issue and provide a permanent fix. Hope this helps!

What Is NBN?
What Is NBN?

What Is NBN?

Question

Hey, I’m James from London and I was wondering, what exactly is NBN?

Here Is what NBN Is

Here Is what NBN Is

Answer

Great question! The National Broadband Network (NBN) is a major infrastructure project in Australia aimed at providing faster and more reliable internet service. The NBN is designed to replace the older ADSL system and has been rolling out progressively across the country.

NBN

The NBN utilises a multi-technology mix including copper wiring, cable broadband, and fibre optics to provide high-speed internet. Unlike the traditional ADSL system that relied solely on copper wiring, the NBN incorporates various technologies, such as fibre-optic lines, to improve speed and reduce bandwidth congestion.

Speed Tiers

You can select from four standard speed tiers offered by NBN providers:

  • Basic NBN 12/1
  • Standard NBN 25/5
  • Standard Plus NBN 50/20
  • Premium NBN 100/20

Each tier provides different upload and download speeds to cater to various internet needs. Some providers also offer ultra-fast plans that go beyond these standard tiers.

NBN Co: The Backbone of NBN

NBN Co is the company responsible for rolling out the NBN and acts as the wholesaler for internet service providers. Here’s how it works:

  • NBN Co manages the network.
  • NBN providers purchase services from NBN Co.
  • Customers select an NBN provider for their internet service.

Types of NBN Connections

There are seven main types of NBN connections:

  • Fibre to the Node (FTTN)
  • Fibre to the Curb (FTTC)
  • Fibre to the Building (FTTB)
  • Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)
  • Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial (HFC)
  • Fixed Wireless
  • Satellite

Each connection type has its pros and cons. For example, FTTP offers the fastest speeds but is less commonly available than FTTN or FTTC.

Broadband vs NBN

While the terms “broadband” and “NBN” are often used interchangeably, it’s important to note that NBN specifically refers to the network built and managed by NBN Co. Broadband is a more generic term that includes any high-speed internet connection.

Who Installs the NBN?

The initial installation is conducted by NBN Co. Once you choose your provider, they’ll guide you through the remaining setup, which could include connecting a modem to the NBN network. Some providers may charge a separate installation fee.

Why Choose NBN?

The NBN offers higher speeds and better reliability compared to older systems, making it a preferred choice for many Australians for work, education, and entertainment.

I hope this clears up any questions you have about the NBN. It’s quite a transformative project aimed at redefining Australia’s internet landscape.

What kind of NBN do I have?

Question

I’ve recently moved to a new property and I’m not sure about the specifics of my internet connection. Can you explain the different types of NBN connections available and how I can identify which one I have at my residence?

Here Is how to find the kind of NBN you have

Here Is how to find the kind of NBN you have

Answer

Identifying Your NBN Connection Type

To determine the specific type of NBN connection your premises is connected to, simply follow these steps:

  1. Visit this link.
  2. Enter and search for your address.
  3. Once you receive your address details, look next to the ‘technology’ section to find out the kind of NBN you have.

By following these steps, you’ll easily identify your NBN connection type.

What kind of NBN do I have? The type of NBN connection you have is determined by the technology used to connect your premises to the NBN network. The NBN uses a mix of technologies, referred to as the Multi Technology Mix (MTM). The main types of NBN connections that utilise a physical line running to the premises are:

  • Fibre to the Premises (FTTP): A direct fibre optic line runs from the nearest available fibre node directly to your premises.
  • Fibre to the Building (FTTB): The fibre optic line runs to a common point within a building, and from there, existing technology is used to connect individual apartments or offices.
  • Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC): This uses existing ‘pay TV’ or cable network lines between the nearest fibre node and your premises.
  • Fibre to the Curb (FTTC): The fibre optic line extends to a point on the nearby curb or street, and from there, existing copper lines connect to your premises.
  • Fibre to the Node (FTTN): The fibre optic line runs to a nearby cabinet or node, and from there, existing copper lines connect to your premises. Additionally, in regional and remote areas, connections might be made using Fixed Wireless or Sky Muster® satellite technologies. To determine the specific type of NBN connection you have, you can check your address on the NBN website.

What lights should be on the NBN box?

Question

I’ve recently had an NBN Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) service installed at my property, and I’m a bit unsure about the lights on the NBN Connection Box. Can you explain what each light means and what I should expect to see when everything is working correctly?

These are the lights that should be on your NBN box

These are the lights that should be on your NBN box

Answer

The status of the lights on your NBN Connection Box indicates the condition of your connection. For an NBN Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) service, the lights on the Connection Box have the following meanings:

POWER:
Off: No power supply. All other lights will be off if the Connection Box has no power.
Red: The Connection Box is operating on backup battery power from the Power Supply unit. If there’s no power outage, troubleshooting is recommended.
Green: The Connection Box has power. Sometimes the light may appear more orange/yellow than green, but this is normal.
OPTICAL:
Off: Connection Box is disabled. If this occurs, contacting your service provider is advised.
Red: No connection to the network. Troubleshooting is recommended.
Green: Successfully connected to the network. This light will flash during data transfer.
ALARM:
Off: Connection Box is working, but no devices are connected.
Red: An issue has been detected. Troubleshooting is recommended.
Green: Connection Box is working with no issues detected.
UNI-D 1/2/3/4:
Off: Nothing is plugged into this port. Only one UNI-D port is typically active for a single NBN service, usually port UNI-D 1.
Orange: A device capable of up to 1000Mbps is plugged in. This light will flash during data transfer.
Green: A device capable of up to 10/100Mbps is plugged in. This light will flash during data transfer.

Note: I have also written a full article for FTTP and all the other technologies. You can find the post here called NBN Connection Box Lights

Where can you buy an NBN connection box?

Question

Hi, I’ve recently moved to a new home and noticed there’s no NBN connection box installed. Can you explain what this box is, who provides it, and how I can get one? Also, are there any costs involved in getting this box, especially if my installation might be a bit unique?

Answer

Answer

Answer

The NBN connection box, also known as an NBN Network Termination Device (NTD), is a crucial piece of equipment that facilitates your connection to the NBN network. It’s essentially a modem that sends and receives data, connecting to a router that then distributes the internet connection throughout your home.

The responsibility for this piece of equipment lies with NBN Co, and it marks the point where their network liability ends. If you face any issues, your first point of contact should be your NBN provider. Importantly, an NBN connection box should be provided to you free of charge during a standard installation.

Any fees related to the NBN connection box would typically be associated with non-standard installations, and you would be informed of these during the installation process. If you’re moving into a new home or a place that hasn’t been connected to the NBN, or if the NBN connection box is missing, the process to obtain one is straightforward: sign up for a plan with an NBN provider.

Depending on the type of NBN technology at your location, the NBN connection box will either be sent to you for self-installation, or an appointment will be arranged for an NBN technician to visit and set it up for you.

Where is my nbn node?

Question

Hi, I’ve been experiencing some intermittent internet issues lately, and I think I might need to reset my NBN modem to see if that fixes the problem. Could you please guide me through the steps to properly reset my NBN modem? I don’t want to mess anything up. Thanks!

Here Is where your nbn node is

Here Is where your nbn node is

Answer

The location of your NBN node is determined by the type of NBN connection you have. For those with an nbn™ Fibre to the Node (FTTN) connection, the node is likely to be a street cabinet. This cabinet allows the nbn™ access network signal to travel over a fibre optic line from the exchange, to the cabinet, and then connect with the existing copper network to reach your premises.

Essentially, the fibre node serves as a junction point between the fibre optic infrastructure and the existing copper phone and internet network. The exact location of your node can vary, but it’s typically situated within a close proximity to your residence or business. If you need to find the specific location of your node, it’s best to contact your service provider or NBN Co directly.

Where to buy NBN cable?

Question

I’ve recently set up an NBN connection at my home, but the provided cable isn’t long enough for my setup. I’ve heard about the RG6 quad shield cable for HFC connections. Can you advise where I might purchase this type of cable, and do I need any special qualifications to install it myself?

Here Is where to buy NBN cable?

Here Is where to buy NBN cable?

Answer

When looking to purchase NBN cables, it’s crucial to ensure you’re getting the right type. For NBN connections, especially HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial), the commonly used cable is the RG6 quad shield. This type of cable is suitable for both TV antenna and cable internet purposes. Some recommended places to buy NBN cables include electronics stores like Jaycar. Additionally, hardware stores such as Bunnings offer these cables by the metre, allowing you to buy the exact length you need.

However, if you’re planning to use the cable for telecommunications purposes, it’s essential to note that you might need to be a registered cabler to make the cable yourself, or you might want to seek assistance from professionals.  Check out our NBN cable Installation Services

Why is my NBN box clicking?

Question

I’ve recently noticed a clicking sound coming from my NBN box, and I’m seeing both red and blue lights flashing on it. I’m concerned about what this might mean. Is this normal, or is there something wrong with my equipment? Should I be doing something to fix this?

Here Is why your NBN box clicking?

Here Is why your NBN box clicking?

Answer

The clicking sound from your NBN box, accompanied by red and blue lights, suggests that the device is either undergoing a diagnostic test or is in a fault state. This could be due to several reasons:

Physical Damage: Check the NBN box and its cables for any visible damage. If there’s any physical damage, it might be the root cause and the equipment may need repair or replacement.

Power Cycle: You can try power cycling the NBN box by unplugging it from the wall socket, waiting for about 30 seconds, and then plugging it back in. This can sometimes reset the device and resolve minor issues.

Light Indicators: If the red light remains on and the blue light is off, it indicates a connection fault. Conversely, if the blue light is on and the red light is off, the device is functioning normally. If the issue persists, it’s recommended to contact your service provider for further assistance.

It’s essential to understand that the NBN box is a crucial component in establishing your internet connection. If it’s making unusual sounds or showing abnormal light patterns, it’s a sign that something might be wrong, and immediate attention is required

Why is NBN so bad?

Why is NBN so bad?

Question

I’ve been considering getting an internet connection for my home, but I’ve come across the term ‘Why is NBN so bad?’ quite frequently online. Can you shed some light on this? I want to understand the reasons behind such perceptions before making a decision.

Your Answer

Your Answer

Answer

The National Broadband Network (NBN) is Australia’s national wholesale open-access data network project. It includes wired and radio communication components rolled out and operated by NBN Co Limited. Here are the answers to your questions:

  1. Why is NBN so bad? The perception of the NBN being “bad” can be attributed to several factors:
    • Mixed Technology Choices: The NBN has used a mix of technologies to deliver its service, including fibre to the premises (FTTP), fibre to the node (FTTN), and hybrid fibre-coaxial (HFC). This mix can lead to varying levels of service quality depending on the technology used in a particular area.
    • Expectation vs. Reality: The initial promise of the NBN was to provide high-speed internet to all Australians. However, due to various reasons, including budget constraints and political decisions, the project’s scope was reduced, leading to disappointment among some users.
    • Installation Issues: Some users have reported problems with the installation process, leading to delays and, in some cases, a lack of service altogether.
    • Comparisons with Other Countries: When comparing the NBN to broadband services in other countries, some believe that Australia is lagging in terms of speed and reliability.
    • Cost: Some users believe that the cost of NBN plans is too high compared to the service quality they receive.

It’s worth noting that while there are criticisms, many users are satisfied with their NBN service. The perception of the NBN’s quality can vary widely depending on individual experiences and expectations.

Will NBN work without a battery?
Will NBN work without a battery?

Will NBN work without a battery?

Question

I’ve heard that some NBN setups have a battery backup for power outages. I’m considering removing mine or not replacing it when it runs out. Can my NBN connection still function without this battery, especially during power cuts? I have the Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) connection. Thanks for your guidance!

The Answer to 'Will NBN work without a battery?'

The Answer to 'Will NBN work without a battery?'

Answer

The answer to whether the NBN will work without a battery is YES!

However, it’s worth noting that certain NBN technologies, such as the NBN Network Termination Device (NTD) for Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) connections, come with a battery backup. This battery backup ensures that the NBN service continues to operate during a power outage for a limited period, allowing users to make emergency calls. If the battery is not functioning or is removed, the NBN service may not work during a power outage. It’s advisable to check with your NBN service provider or the NBN Co website for specific details about your connection type and the role of the battery.
