Hi there, I’m considering switching to NBN but I’m a bit confused. I currently have a landline phone connection. Do I need to maintain this separate phone line to get NBN? And if I want to keep my home phone service, how does that work with the new NBN setup?

No, you don’t need a separate phone line for the NBN. The days when a phone line was essential for internet access are behind us. Modern broadband technologies, including the NBN, use either full fibre or a hybrid of fibre and copper. When copper is used, it’s exclusively for its digital component, unlike older technologies that used a mix of analogue (for landline calls) and digital. This is somewhat similar to ADSL but with the potential for much faster speeds.
However, while you don’t need a separate phone line for internet access, certain NBN technologies do use the old phone socket to connect. These technologies include Fibre-to-the-Curb (FTTC), Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB), and Fibre-to-the-Node (FTTN). It’s worth noting that while you can get a home phone service with an NBN plan, the technology used is different. Traditional copper wiring is no longer used for making and receiving calls. Instead, digital voice over internet protocol (VoIP) technology is employed.
