What lights should be on the NBN box?

Question

I’ve recently had an NBN Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) service installed at my property, and I’m a bit unsure about the lights on the NBN Connection Box. Can you explain what each light means and what I should expect to see when everything is working correctly?

Answer

The status of the lights on your NBN Connection Box indicates the condition of your connection. For an NBN Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) service, the lights on the Connection Box have the following meanings:

POWER:
Off: No power supply. All other lights will be off if the Connection Box has no power.
Red: The Connection Box is operating on backup battery power from the Power Supply unit. If there’s no power outage, troubleshooting is recommended.
Green: The Connection Box has power. Sometimes the light may appear more orange/yellow than green, but this is normal.
OPTICAL:
Off: Connection Box is disabled. If this occurs, contacting your service provider is advised.
Red: No connection to the network. Troubleshooting is recommended.
Green: Successfully connected to the network. This light will flash during data transfer.
ALARM:
Off: Connection Box is working, but no devices are connected.
Red: An issue has been detected. Troubleshooting is recommended.
Green: Connection Box is working with no issues detected.
UNI-D 1/2/3/4:
Off: Nothing is plugged into this port. Only one UNI-D port is typically active for a single NBN service, usually port UNI-D 1.
Orange: A device capable of up to 1000Mbps is plugged in. This light will flash during data transfer.
Green: A device capable of up to 10/100Mbps is plugged in. This light will flash during data transfer.
