ISP And Telco Detailed Reoprting
If your ISP or Telco has told you that the problem was on “your side” and we discover that the problem is actually on their side, we have a detailed reporting method that you can submit to them.
Phone line repairs are carried out in two parts. Your ISP covers the networks side of your cable from the network boundary of your home or office to the exchange or node. An ACMA registered cabler is responsible for the network boundary to your sockets and outlets. First, call your ISP so they can run a set of automated tests on your line and clear any network faults. If this test is clear find a registered cabler like us to help with the rest.
A few common reoccurring problems we come across are things like, bad or old connection. High resistance (HR) can be an issue with old copper wires that have been twisted together. Another problem we commonly find is Low resistance. (LR) this is usually a problem with older cables, that might be laying on the earth or in damp settings. The insulation around the copper breaks down, causing interference on your service.
On the day our technician visits you we will run two separate tests. Testing directly on the Telstra or NBN lead-in cable for speed, and possible network faults. The other test we will run on your private internal wiring. We will also conduct a visual inspection of your socket outlets and leads for any sign of damage. If we find the problem to be network related, we can help with getting your ISP to act. We provide a full pdf report, with photos and video if needed, we can call and speak to your ISP and explain the details of our findings, so you can rest easy knowing it’s in our hands.
If you have had a Telstra or NBN technician visit your property and determine that your lead-in cable is damaged or non-existent and you need to have one installed or repaired because they can’t do it, then I bet you find yourself a little surprised. Most ISP’s can refer you to an NBN or Telstra contractor who may take 3-6 months to get around to doing it or find a private contractor. If you are finding yourself in a situation like this give us a call and we can help you through this process. Aerial and underground lead-in cables, from 2 pair to 100 pair and MDF installations.
With NBN very likely in your street or coming in the next few months or years, there may be a few little teething issues that you may experience when doing the swap. We have many solutions to most of these common problems. Did you know for instance that emergency phones for lifts, alarms, medial alerts and other emergency equipment will not work with NBN VoIP phones? Did you know that many people who come over from ADSL or cable services need extra cabling work for their phone services to work on existing sockets like before?
One of the problems NBN is going about solving is the signal attenuation of the copper cabling. The further from the telephone exchange you live the slower your ADSL internet speeds will be. Line attenuation is measured in decibels (dB) the lower the dB the better the line attenuation (LA). For example, if your LA is 20dB this would roughly mean you live about 1km from the exchange and should expect 21Mbps speeds. If your LA is 60 dB you would live about 4.5km from the exchange and expect about 3Mbps speeds dropouts and sync issues.
