HFC F-Connector Corrosion — Heritage Terraces in Newtown, Leichhardt, Balmain, and Glebe
The inner west's terrace belt — Newtown, Leichhardt, Balmain, Glebe, Annandale, Rozelle, Stanmore, and Enmore — is one of the largest concentrations of HFC NBN in Australia. These properties use coaxial cable from the street pit to an F-connector wall plate. In terrace homes built between the 1880s and 1940s, the wall plate F-connector is exposed to Sydney's humid coastal air and corrodes over time. A corroded F-connector degrades HFC signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), causing speed drops, intermittent dropouts, and packet loss that are often rain-correlated. ISPs test signal at the pit — not at your wall plate — and close tickets when the node-side reading is within spec.
FTTC DPU Resync Faults — Repeated Dropouts in Marrickville, Dulwich Hill, and Ashfield
The inner west's mid-ring suburbs — Marrickville, Dulwich Hill, Ashfield, Summer Hill, Lewisham, Petersham, and Haberfield — are predominantly FTTC territory. FTTC connects a Distribution Point Unit (DPU) in the street pit to your modem via a short copper run. When this copper pair develops a fault — corroded termination at the wall plate, moisture entering the lead-in cable where it passes through an original brick or fibro terrace wall, or a degraded cable from a previous renovation — the DPU periodically loses sync and drops the connection for one to three minutes, then recovers. ISPs see these resync events in their logs but routinely attribute them to the router and close the ticket without attending on-site.
Rain-Correlated Internet Dropouts — Moisture Ingress Through Original Terrace Walls
Rain-correlated internet faults are among the most common fault type we diagnose in the Inner West. When your internet drops out or degrades during wet weather and recovers as it dries, moisture is entering the cabling at a breach point. For HFC connections in Newtown, Leichhardt, and Balmain terraces, the most common breach is an unsealed or cracked wall entry point where the coaxial cable passes through the original sandstone or brick external wall. For FTTC properties in Marrickville and Ashfield, moisture at the lead-in wall entry corrodes the copper pair termination and increases resistance, triggering DPU resync events. The fault resolves temporarily as moisture evaporates — until the next rainfall. ISPs cannot diagnose intermittent rain-correlated faults remotely.
Pre-War Heritage Copper Wiring — Aged Internal Telecommunications Infrastructure in Inner West Terraces
The Inner West terrace belt contains some of the oldest telecommunications wiring in Australia. Properties built between the 1880s and 1940s across Newtown, Leichhardt, Balmain, Glebe, and Rozelle were wired with cloth-insulated or early paper-insulated telephone cable that was never replaced during the NBN rollout. For properties on FTTN connections, this aged copper adds significant attenuation to the pair and reduces maximum sync speed. Even HFC properties with unmodified internal wiring can suffer from degraded coaxial extensions, incorrectly spliced cable runs, or wall plates installed into original timber-framed walls where moisture and pests have compromised the cable sheath. ISPs have no visibility into the age or condition of internal telecommunications wiring.
Coaxial Splitter Degradation — HFC Signal Loss in Victorian Terrace Conversions
Many inner west terrace homes were converted to multi-dwelling properties or had television antenna infrastructure installed during the 1970s and 1980s. During the HFC NBN rollout, some of this existing coaxial infrastructure was incorporated into the installation — including older splitters used to distribute the HFC signal to multiple rooms or outlets. Each splitter introduces 3–4 dB of signal loss, and a degraded or incorrectly specified splitter can reduce HFC SNR to levels that cause intermittent dropouts. In terrace ceiling cavities exposed to summer heat and condensation, a splitter installed during the NBN rollout can corrode or degrade within a few years. ISPs cannot detect splitter-induced signal loss because their testing sees only the modem input level, not the split path quality.
MDF Faults in Older Inner West Apartment Conversions — Newtown, Erskineville, and St Peters
The Inner West has a significant stock of older apartment conversions — Victorian terraces and warehouse buildings converted to units in Newtown, Erskineville, St Peters, Marrickville, and along the Parramatta Road corridor. These buildings often have Main Distribution Frame (MDF) Krone punch-down blocks in meter cupboards or small comms rooms where copper pair assignments are made for each apartment. When a Krone IDC connection corrodes, fails, or is accidentally disturbed during building electrical works, the affected apartment's internet and phone service degrades or dies. ISPs refuse to enter these comms rooms, classifying all internal building cabling as customer premises infrastructure outside their scope. We arrange access with building managers and carry out Krone IDC diagnosis and re-jumpering on the same visit.
