NBN NTD BOX
PRE-WIRING SYDNEY

NBN Co Places It at the Wall.
We Let You Choose Where.

NBN NTD box pre-wiring in Sydney runs internal conduit from your property's PCD entry point to the exact room and wall position where you want your NBN connection box installed. A nylon drawstring — or pre-pulled fibre — is threaded through the P20 conduit route so the NBN Co technician has a clear path on the day of your FTTP upgrade, without improvising a run across the wrong wall. Completed by Open Registered Cabler A10089, giving you a compliant conduit path before your FTTP appointment is confirmed.

The Problem

WHY YOUR NBN CONNECTION BOX
ENDS UP IN THE WRONG PLACE

01

NBN Co Won't Run the Fibre to Your Preferred Location

NBN Co technicians install the NTD device at or near the PCD on the external wall. Their standard reach is roughly 12 metres from the PCD entry point — and if your preferred room is beyond that, or requires routing through internal walls and ceiling cavities, they will default to the nearest compliant position, not the one you actually want. Without a pre-installed conduit path already in place, you have no say in where the NBN connection box lands on installation day.

02

The PCD Is on the Opposite Side of the House

PCD placement is determined by where the fibre enters the property from the street — not by where you want to use the internet. Homes on corner blocks, properties with long frontages, or renovated houses often find the PCD ends up on a side wall, at the garage, or in a utility area completely removed from the home office, living room, or study where the router actually needs to sit. Without a pre-wired internal conduit route, the NBN connection box goes on the wrong side of the house with cable dangling down the wall.

03

You Cannot Move the NTD After It Has Been Installed

Once the NTD is installed and the fibre is terminated, the connection is locked to that wall position. Moving it afterwards requires a new NBN Co appointment — if they will do it at all — plus a private cabling job to run a new route. Most customers who ask about relocation after the fact are told to live with the original position or pay for an internal extension themselves. Getting the conduit pre-wired before the FTTP installation is the only practical way to ensure the NBN connection box is in the right place from day one.

04

No Conduit Means No Options on Installation Day

If no internal conduit is in place, the NBN Co technician arriving on the day has nothing to work with. There is no clean route for the fibre, no drawstring to pull through ceiling cavities, and no way to get the cable to your preferred room without surface-mounted cable trunking along architraves and walls. Even if you explain your preference to the technician, without the pre-installed conduit path, they cannot honour it. The decision gets made in the first five minutes of the appointment and you will not get another chance that day.

05

Your FTTP Upgrade Is Booked and There Is No Time Left

FTTP upgrade appointments are often scheduled weeks or months in advance, and the window between notification and the actual install date can be short. Many customers only start thinking about NTD placement once the appointment is confirmed — at which point there may be only days to arrange the pre-wiring. SECURE A COM can move quickly when an FTTP appointment is already locked in, but acting before the upgrade is booked gives the best outcome. Do not wait until the technician is on the doorstep to wish the conduit had been pre-installed.

How It Works

FROM BOOKING TO NBN CO READY

Getting your NBN connection box in the right location requires more than just asking NBN Co nicely. It requires a pre-installed conduit path — scoped correctly, installed before the FTTP appointment, and handed over with a drawstring ready to pull through. Here is exactly what happens from the first call to the day your FTTP technician arrives and finds everything in place.

01
Step 01

Book and Describe Your FTTP Upgrade Situation

Use our online contact form or call directly and describe your property situation — whether your FTTP upgrade is already booked and you are running out of time, whether you know where the PCD is located on the external wall, or whether you simply want the NBN connection box in a specific room and are not sure what is involved. Photographs of the PCD location, the room where you want the connection box, and any ceiling access points speed up the initial assessment significantly. We confirm whether a site inspection is required or whether we can start scoping from your description alone.

Online contact 24/7 FTTP / HFC / FTTC upgrades Instant confirmation No NBN Co involvement Saturday by request
02
Step 02

On-Site Assessment — PCD Location and Preferred NTD Position

We attend site and carry out a full assessment of the conduit route from the PCD entry point to your preferred NBN connection box position. This includes confirming exactly where the PCD is mounted on the external wall, identifying the internal room where you want the NTD installed, and mapping the routing path through ceiling cavities, wall cavities, or sub-floor spaces as required. We measure the run length, count the number of wall penetrations, check for any obstructions such as fire stops or structural members, and confirm whether a drawstring or fibre pre-pull is the right approach for your property before quoting.

PCD location confirmed Preferred NTD room assessed Internal route mapped Wall penetration points identified Drawstring or pre-pull confirmed
03
Step 03

Conduit Installed from PCD Entry Point to NTD Wall Position

We install the internal conduit run from the PCD wall entry point, routing through the ceiling cavity or wall cavity to the exact room and wall position where the NBN connection box will be installed. P20 conduit is used throughout — the same specification required for external lead-in runs — with correct bend radius maintained at every turn to ensure the fibre optic cable can be drawn through cleanly without damage to the cable jacket or fibre core. Wall penetrations are made cleanly, sealed against moisture and insects, and the conduit is terminated at a surface-mounted entry fitting at the preferred NTD wall position ready for the pull-through.

04
Step 04

Drawstring or Pre-Pulled Fibre Threaded Through the Conduit

Once the conduit run is complete, a nylon drawstring is threaded through the full length from the PCD entry point to the preferred NTD wall position. The drawstring remains inside the conduit and is what the NBN Co technician uses to pull the FTTP fibre cable through to the connection box location on installation day. For customers who prefer it, we can pre-pull the actual fibre optic cable through the conduit rather than a drawstring — this option requires confirmation that the fibre spec and connector type match what NBN Co will terminate. Both options are discussed during the assessment and confirmed in the written quote before any work proceeds.

Step 05

NBN Co Arrives — NBN Connection Box Placed Where You Chose

When the NBN Co technician arrives on the day of your FTTP installation, the pre-installed conduit path and drawstring are ready and waiting. The technician pulls the fibre through the conduit to the preferred wall position and installs the NTD at the location you specified — rather than defaulting to the nearest point on the external wall. We provide written documentation of the pre-wired conduit run and drawstring installation for your records and to hand to the NBN Co technician. The pre-wiring is covered by a 12-month workmanship guarantee, and if the NBN Co technician needs any clarification about the conduit route, we are available to answer questions on the day of installation.

PRICING FAQ

NTD pre-wiring is quoted job-by-job because every property is different. The main cost drivers are the internal conduit run length from the PCD to your preferred NBN connection box room, the number of wall penetrations required, and the routing method — ceiling cavity access is typically faster than sub-floor or surface-mounted trunking. We provide a written quote covering labour and materials separately after reviewing your property. No work starts until you approve the quote.
Three factors drive pre-wiring pricing: the run length between the PCD entry point and your preferred NTD room (longer runs require more conduit and more time), the routing method (ceiling cavity runs are typically the cleanest and fastest; sub-floor access, wall chasing, or surface-mounted trunking each add complexity), and the number of wall penetrations required along the route. We assess all of these during the site inspection before providing your written quote, so there are no cost surprises once work begins.
Yes — the nylon drawstring is always included as standard in every NTD pre-wiring quote. Installing a drawstring without a conduit is meaningless, and installing conduit without a drawstring defeats the purpose of pre-wiring entirely. The drawstring runs the full length of the conduit from the PCD entry point to the preferred NTD wall position and is labelled at both ends for the NBN Co technician. There is no additional charge for the drawstring — it is part of the standard scope.
Fibre pre-pull is available by request as an upgrade to the standard drawstring option. This involves drawing the actual FTTP fibre optic cable through the conduit run before the NBN Co appointment — so the technician only needs to terminate the cable at the NTD rather than pulling it through. This option requires confirmation of the fibre cable specification and connector type to ensure compatibility with the NBN Co installation. Pre-pull is itemised separately in the written quote. Contact us to discuss whether pre-pull is the right option for your FTTP upgrade.
Yes. NTD pre-wiring in apartments and units follows the same principle but the scope depends on the building type. In FTTB buildings, the NBN connection point is typically in the building's communications room rather than on an external wall, so the internal run starts from that point to your preferred in-unit NTD position. Ceiling cavities in apartments may have different access requirements, and strata approval may be needed for penetrations through fire-rated floors or walls. We assess the specific requirements during the site inspection and confirm what approvals, if any, are required before quoting.
Often yes — contact us as soon as possible and we will confirm whether we can complete the pre-wiring before your FTTP appointment. In many cases, straightforward runs through ceiling cavities can be scoped, quoted, and installed within a few days. More complex jobs with limited ceiling access or required strata approvals take longer. The earlier you contact us, the more options we have. Do not wait until the day before the NBN Co appointment — if pre-wiring cannot be completed in time, we will tell you clearly so you can decide whether to reschedule the FTTP installation.

NBN NTD box pre-wiring is the installation of an internal conduit run — with a nylon drawstring inside it — from the external PCD wall entry point to the room and wall position where you want your NBN connection box placed. The conduit and drawstring are installed before your FTTP upgrade appointment so that the NBN Co technician can pull the fibre through to your preferred location on the day, rather than defaulting to wherever the PCD happens to be on the external wall.

It is most commonly needed by homeowners upgrading from FTTN, FTTC, or HFC to FTTP who have a specific room in mind for the connection box — a home office, study, or lounge room — that is not conveniently located next to the PCD. It is also useful when the PCD is on an inaccessible wall, in a garage, or on the side of the house furthest from where the router needs to sit.

NBN Co's installation scope covers connecting the fibre from the network to your premises and placing the NTD device at a standard location near the PCD. Their technicians are not scoped to run internal conduit through your ceiling cavities, make wall penetrations to other rooms, or carry out the kind of internal cabling work that would be required to get the connection box to a preferred position on the other side of the house.

The practical limit is roughly 12 metres of internal cable from the PCD entry point. If your preferred NTD room requires more than that, or requires routing through internal walls and ceiling cavities, NBN Co will place the device at the closest compliant position and move on. The responsibility for internal routing to a preferred location sits with the property owner — which is where private cabling work such as NTD pre-wiring comes in.

The PCD (Property Connection Device) — sometimes called the network boundary point — is the external mounting point on the outside wall of your property where the NBN lead-in cable enters the building. On FTTP properties, it is the external wall bracket or conduit entry point where the fibre from the street or pit arrives at your premises. For most residential properties, it is mounted on an external wall, often facing the street or at the side of the building closest to the Telstra pit.

The position of the PCD is determined during the original NBN design for your property and is not something the property owner chooses. On some properties, particularly those on large blocks or corner allotments, the PCD ends up on a wall that is inconvenient for internal connection box placement — which is the most common reason NTD pre-wiring is needed.

There is no fixed maximum distance for the internal conduit run — the practical limit depends on the number and tightness of bends required, not the linear distance alone. Fibre optic cable has a minimum bend radius that must not be exceeded at any point in the conduit run, otherwise the cable can be damaged during the pull-through. A long, straight run through an open ceiling cavity is far easier to execute than a shorter run with multiple tight bends around obstacles.

For most residential pre-wiring jobs, runs between five and fifteen metres through ceiling cavities are straightforward. Longer runs or runs through wall cavities with multiple bends require careful planning and may involve intermediate access points. We assess the specific run at your property during the site inspection and design the conduit route to ensure fibre can be pulled through cleanly before quoting.

A drawstring is a nylon cord threaded through the full length of the pre-installed conduit. When the NBN Co technician arrives on installation day, they attach the FTTP fibre cable to the drawstring and pull it through the conduit to the NTD wall position. The technician then terminates the cable and installs the NTD. This is the standard pre-wiring option and works with every FTTP installation — the drawstring is compatible with whatever fibre specification NBN Co brings on the day.

Pre-pulled fibre involves SECURE A COM drawing the actual optical fibre cable through the conduit before the NBN Co appointment. The technician only needs to terminate the cable rather than pulling it through. This option requires prior confirmation of the fibre spec and connector type that NBN Co will use for your specific property and upgrade type, and is not always possible or necessary. We discuss both options during the assessment and recommend the most practical approach for your situation.

Yes — and this is actually the ideal timing. If you know your area has been declared eligible for FTTP or your RSP has advised an upgrade is coming, getting the conduit pre-installed before the NBN Co appointment is booked gives you the most flexibility. The conduit and drawstring can sit in place for months without any issues — the drawstring does not degrade inside a sealed conduit and is ready whenever the NBN Co technician arrives.

Acting early also removes time pressure. If you wait until the FTTP upgrade appointment is confirmed, you may only have a short window to organise pre-wiring before the installation date. Pre-wiring before the upgrade is booked means the internal routing is already done and the NBN Co appointment can proceed without any scheduling stress on either side.

In the vast majority of cases, yes. When an NBN Co technician arrives and finds a clearly labelled conduit with a drawstring ready at the PCD entry point and terminated at the preferred NTD wall position, they will typically use it to pull the fibre through and install the connection box at that location. The pre-wired conduit makes their job straightforward — it tells them exactly where the cable needs to go and gives them a clean pull path to get it there.

The conduit must be installed correctly — compliant P20 specification, correct bend radius throughout, and a clear drawstring accessible at both ends. We provide written documentation of the pre-wiring for the technician, and if there are any questions about the installation on the day, we are available by phone to clarify. Properly installed pre-wiring with correct labelling and documentation has a high acceptance rate in our experience with Sydney FTTP installations.

Yes, NTD pre-wiring is applicable to apartments and units, though the scope and access requirements differ from freestanding houses. In FTTB apartment buildings, the fibre terminates in the building's communications room or riser, and the internal run from that point to your preferred in-unit connection box position is the scope of the pre-wiring. Ceiling cavity access in apartments can be more limited, and some buildings use existing conduit risers that may be usable if they have drawstrings already installed.

For apartments in strata schemes, penetrations through fire-rated floors, ceilings, or walls require strata body corporate approval before work can begin. We advise on what approvals are needed during the site inspection. Where strata approval is required, we recommend initiating that process early — it can take several weeks to obtain, and pre-wiring cannot begin without the relevant permissions in place.
