The Problem

WHY NBN INSTALLATION IN NSW NEEDS A REGISTERED CABLER

From strata apartments in Sydney's west to rural properties on the Central Coast — NBN installation across New South Wales has common failure points. Most trace back to the same issue: work done without a licensed cabler, or ISP contractors cutting corners on the physical installation.

// PROBLEM 01

ISP Installer Puts the NTD in the Wrong Room

When NBN Co or an ISP contractor completes your service connection, they choose the NTD placement for their convenience — not yours. Across NSW properties, this results in the NBN box ending up in a garage, laundry, or spare bedroom, forcing you to run Wi-Fi from the wrong end of the house. Moving it requires a registered cabler and is work your ISP will not do.

ISP Limitation
// PROBLEM 02

Apartment NBN Fails Without MDF Jumpering

Across NSW strata buildings, NBN activation at the unit level requires a registered cabler to access the building's Main Distribution Frame and complete Krone block jumpering to your specific apartment pair. ISP contractors routinely skip this step or lack comms room access. The result is an active NBN plan with no working connection — despite the ISP insisting the line is provisioned.

Strata / Apartments
// PROBLEM 03

Old Properties Have No Conduit — or Damaged Conduit

NSW has a large stock of pre-1990 homes where no underground conduit exists between the street pit and the premises, or existing conduit has cracked or collapsed from tree root intrusion and age. Without conduit, the lead-in cable has no protected pathway from the street boundary. This affects NBN provisioning directly — NBN Co cannot complete the connection without a suitable underground route in place.

Lead-In / Conduit
// PROBLEM 04

Regional NSW Properties Have Long Lead-In Cable Runs

Semi-rural and rural properties across NSW regularly have lead-in cable distances of 30–80 metres from the street boundary to the premises. Standard gel-filled Cat3 cable degrades over these runs if the installation is not properly managed. Longer conduit installations require correct cable sizing, draw wire, and sealed conduit entry points to prevent water ingress — details that a non-cabler installation routinely misses.

Regional NSW
// PROBLEM 05

Heritage and Solid-Brick Homes Block Standard Cable Routes

A significant proportion of NSW's housing stock — particularly across inner Sydney, the Blue Mountains, and older regional centres — consists of solid brick, double brick, or heritage-listed properties with no ceiling cavity and concrete floors. Standard cable routes are impossible without surface conduit or specialist access techniques. ISP contractors will not quote this work. A registered cabler with experience in these property types is required.

Access Challenges
// PROBLEM 06

New Build Pre-Wire Window Closes After Plasterboard

For new builds and major renovations across NSW, there is a defined window after the frame is up and before plasterboard goes on when NBN cabling should be installed. Missing this window means costly retrofitting through finished walls or visible surface-mounted conduit as a compromise. Builders often do not coordinate the cabler trade at the right stage — and post-plasterboard cable installation on a multi-storey NSW home can cost significantly more than pre-wiring at frame stage.

FROM FIRST CALL TO COMPLETED INSTALLATION — ACROSS NEW SOUTH WALES

Every NBN installation across NSW starts with a site survey and ends with a tested, compliant installation backed by a 12-month workmanship guarantee. Travel is confirmed upfront — so you know exactly what to expect before booking, wherever you are in New South Wales.

01
Step 01 / Contact & Scope

Describe Your Installation Requirements

Call us on 02 9188 1577 or use the contact form to describe your NBN installation requirements. Tell us your property type, location in NSW, and what you need — whether it's a single extra wall socket, a full property pre-wire, underground conduit, or MDF jumpering for an apartment. There's no obligation at this stage. For straightforward jobs, we can often provide an indicative price range over the phone. For larger or more complex scopes, we'll arrange a site survey to assess the property and provide an accurate written quote before any work is agreed.

Phone or online contact No obligation All property types State-wide NSW Apartments & strata
02
Step 02 / Site Survey & Quote

Site Survey and Written Quote — Travel Confirmed

For all NBN installation work across NSW, we visit the property to assess access, confirm the NBN technology type in service (FTTP, FTTN, FTTC or HFC), map cable routes through the ceiling cavity or via surface conduit, and confirm any comms room access requirements for apartment buildings. Travel distance and timing are confirmed at this stage — including any travel surcharges applicable outside Greater Sydney. The written quote issued after the survey covers all labour, materials and GST. No work proceeds without your written approval of the quote.

Written quote Travel confirmed upfront All tech types assessed Ceiling & conduit routes MDF access scoped
03
Step 03 / Installation Day

Installation Day — Registered Cabler On-Site

On the agreed installation day, the Open Registered Cabler arrives with all materials specified in the written quote. Cable runs are completed through ceiling cavities, wall cavities or surface conduit as agreed during the survey. Underground conduit is installed to 300mm minimum depth with gel-filled cable rated for direct burial. For apartment jobs, the technician accesses the MDF comms room at the building-management-confirmed time and completes Krone block jumpering for the specific unit pair. For new builds and renovations, all conduit is installed with draw wire and AS/CA S009:2020 compliant labelling before any wall plates are fitted.

04
Step 04 / Testing & Sign-Off

Continuity Testing and NBN Sign-Off

Every cable run is tested for continuity and correct RJ45 pinout before any wall plate is screwed in. Once all sockets are terminated, the NTD is commissioned at its new position and the NBN service is verified live against your active plan. Speed is measured at the NTD output and confirmed to be delivering expected performance for the connection type. For phone line installations, each socket is tested for ring voltage and dial tone on your NBN voice service. Where the installation includes pre-wiring only (no active NTD provisioned yet), continuity and labelling are documented for the record and provided to the property owner before handover.

Step 05 / Handover & Guarantee

Documentation Provided — 12-Month Guarantee Issued

Before the technician leaves your NSW property, written documentation of the completed installation is provided — covering cable runs, socket positions, the NTD location, and any MDF termination details. A 12-month workmanship guarantee is issued covering all cabling, conduit, and termination work carried out during the job. If any defect in the workmanship appears within 12 months — a termination fails, a conduit joint leaks, a socket loses continuity — SECURE A COM returns to remedy it at no additional charge. SECURE A COM is headquartered in the Sutherland Shire, south of Sydney. This page exists because we genuinely travel to properties across New South Wales — and often further. There are very few registered cablers in NSW who carry an Open Cabler Registration (A10089) and the equipment required to complete the full scope of NBN installation work we offer. We've been doing this since 2008 and we travel state-wide for jobs that matter. Properties outside Greater Sydney are welcome — travel charges may apply and are confirmed in the written quote before any work proceeds.

PRICING FAQ — NSW

Travel charges apply for NBN installation work outside the Greater Sydney region. SECURE A COM is based in Sutherland Shire, and all travel time and fuel costs outside our standard service area are itemised clearly in the written quote — there are no hidden charges on the day. Travel charges vary based on distance from our base, not a flat state-wide rate. For work within Greater Sydney, no travel surcharge applies. The written quote you receive before work begins will show the total cost including any travel component, so you can make an informed decision before we proceed. See our Terms and Conditions for full details.
Yes. Every written quote issued for NBN installation work across NSW itemises labour, materials and GST separately so you can see exactly what you are paying for. Materials include Cat6 cable, conduit, keystone jacks, wall plates and any MDF jumper components. Labour covers all on-site time from arrival to final testing and sign-off. GST is shown as a separate line item. You will never be charged for materials or labour that were not in the agreed quote. If site conditions change and variation work is required, this is discussed and approved before proceeding.
Straightforward NBN installation jobs — a single socket addition or NTD relocation in a standard house with ceiling cavity access — can usually be quoted over the phone. A site survey is required when the job involves conduit installation (underground or surface), MDF jumpering in a strata apartment comms room, heritage properties with no ceiling access, or regional NSW properties with long lead-in runs from the street boundary. For regional properties outside Greater Sydney, the site survey visit cost is included in the overall installation quote and not charged separately.
A deposit may be required for larger NBN installation jobs in regional NSW or for work with significant materials costs (such as underground conduit installation or large pre-wire projects). This is always discussed before you accept the quote. For standard metro Sydney residential installations — a socket or NTD relocation — no deposit is typically required. Payment is due on completion of the work. For full payment and deposit terms, see our Terms and Conditions.
For the same physical scope of work — same number of sockets, same cable run lengths, same conduit requirements — the installation labour cost does not change based on geography. What changes is the travel component, which is itemised separately in the written quote. Regional NSW properties also frequently have longer lead-in conduit runs from the street boundary to the building, more extensive underground conduit requirements, and greater distances between the NTD entry point and the preferred router location — all of which affect total installation cost regardless of location. The written quote covers all of this transparently before you commit.
We accept bank transfer (EFT), credit card and debit card for NBN installation work across NSW. Payment is due on completion of the installation unless a deposit arrangement has been agreed in advance for larger regional projects. A tax invoice including all line items — labour, materials, GST and any travel charges — is issued on the day of completion. For business and strata clients requiring invoice terms, this can be arranged prior to work commencing. Contact us to discuss invoicing arrangements for commercial or multi-site NBN installation projects across NSW.

Yes. SECURE A COM performs NBN installation work across New South Wales, not only in Greater Sydney. We are based in Sutherland Shire and travel throughout NSW for residential, commercial and strata installations that require a registered cabler. Regional and rural areas are covered — the availability of few registered cablers who genuinely travel state-wide is why this page exists. Travel availability for your specific location is confirmed when you make contact. A written quote covering all labour, materials, GST and any applicable travel charges is issued before work is scheduled.
Travel charges apply for NBN installation work outside the Greater Sydney region. These charges are based on distance from our Sutherland Shire base and are itemised separately in the written quote — never added on the day without prior agreement. For most regional jobs, we aim to complete everything in a single visit to keep travel costs proportionate to the installation work. For locations within Greater Sydney, no travel surcharge applies. Full details of our travel charge policy are in our Terms and Conditions.
SECURE A COM provides the full range of NBN installation services across NSW — NBN wall socket installation, NBN cabling, MDF jumpering for apartments, NTD box relocation, underground conduit installation, phone line installation for NBN voice, and structured data cabling. We also pre-wire new builds and renovations before plasterboard, ensuring conduit and cable routes are correct at the frame stage. All work is carried out by Open Registered Cabler A10089, compliant with AS/CA S009:2020.
Yes. Strata apartment NBN installation in regional NSW follows the same process as Sydney — we contact building management to arrange MDF comms room access, identify your apartment's copper pair in the building's distribution network, and complete the Krone block jumpering that connects your unit to the NBN distribution point. Without this step, NBN activations in apartments frequently fail. We coordinate access, complete the work in a single visit where possible, and provide documentation showing the jumpering work completed. Travel to regional NSW for strata installation is confirmed and quoted upfront.
NBN installation is quoted individually — no fixed price list applies because every property has different cable run distances, access conditions, conduit requirements and NTD placement needs. We scope the work by phone for straightforward jobs, or by on-site survey for larger or complex installations. The written quote itemises labour, materials and GST separately, plus any travel charges for locations outside Greater Sydney. Regional NSW properties often have longer conduit runs from the street boundary and greater distances between the NTD entry point and the router location — all factored into the quote before you commit.
Yes. We pre-wire new builds at the frame stage for NBN infrastructure across NSW, including regional and rural properties. The pre-wire involves installing conduit from the boundary entry point through the building frame, running Cat6 cable to each planned socket location, positioning rough-in boxes for wall plates after plastering, and completing the NTD enclosure preparation. This work must happen before plasterboard goes up — the window is narrow and missing it results in expensive retrofit cabling. We coordinate directly with your builder's construction program to schedule the pre-wire visit at the correct stage.
The technical work — cabling, conduit, terminations, MDF jumpering and compliance requirements — is identical regardless of location. What changes in regional NSW is the practical context: properties often sit on larger blocks with longer lead-in conduit runs from the street boundary, existing conduit infrastructure is less common, and ceiling cavity access is more variable in older rural homes. The NBN technology type at a regional address may also differ from metro — FTTC is common in Sydney suburbs, while regional properties may be on FTTN or even FTTP depending on the NBN Co rollout for that area. The written quote addresses all of this specifically.
MDF comms room access in strata buildings requires prior arrangement with building management or the strata manager. In practice, you need to contact your building manager, explain that you require a registered cabler to access the MDF for NBN jumpering, and arrange a time when access can be supervised or keypad codes provided. SECURE A COM can assist with this — we have experience coordinating MDF access across Sydney and regional NSW strata buildings and can communicate directly with building management on your behalf if needed. The MDF jumpering itself is completed in under an hour once access is arranged.
